10 Ways To Save Money On Your Winter Electricity Heating Bills - Quick Tips!

Posted in

Wednesday August 4, 2010

1) Choose the right size appliance for the area you want to heat.

2) Check the running costs when purchasing a heater. It might cost a bit more intitially, but you should recoup the extra costs rather quickly with the money you save in running costs.

An example of running costs for heaters –

3) Put a plug in any leaks. Put door snakes under doors, and seal up any leaks around windows. Also try to seal any other places that cold air can get in,  such as pet doors, around window mounted air conditioners, unused fireplaces, exhaust fans etc.

4) Use block out/ thermal lined curtains. Leave them open during the day to allow the sunlight in, and close at night to help retain the heat inside your home.

5) Only heat the room you are using by closing doors and windows to any other rooms that are not being used.

6) Insulate your roof. If you can’t afford to do your whole house, you might be able to just do the most used rooms, such as the lounge room and bedrooms.

7) Rug up with some extra clothes, blankets and hot water bottles so you can turn the heater down by a few degrees. For every degree in the 15 -21 degree range you will save around on heating costs.

8) Electric Blankets use much less energy than room heaters, so warm your bed up before you go to bed and then turn it off. Or you can make sure you have an electric blanket with a timer so it switches off by the time you fall asleep. Most electric blankets have timers of 30/60/ 120 minutes.

9) Wrap some insulation around your hot water system to help it retain heat and use less electricity.

10) Have quick showers. It’s hard to get out of a hot shower on cold night, so have your shower just before you go to bed so you can go straight to your warm doona or electric blanket.
