How to save 50% - 80% on your Grocery Bills

Posted in

Wednesday August 4, 2010

I know I am getting older when I buy $50 worth of groceries that all fit in the one shopping bag, and I think back to how $50 used to fill up my entire boot with groceries - and enough money left over to fill up the car on the way home!

OK maybe I've exaggerated slightly, but everything has gone up and money just doesn’t seem to stretch as far as it used to at the checkout. But there are some great organisations that will help you save an absolute fortune so you can stretch your dollar further in these tougher times. Here are two such places:

CommuniCare is a charitable organisation that supplies fruit and vegetable packs worth over approx $60 for just $30. Although they are a charitable organisation, they assure me they are available to absolutely everyone - regardless if you are rich or poor.

The way they work is you must buy and initial membership, which costs $25 for the year. Then you are able to buy your pack each week or fortnight for just $30.

CommuniCare is run by volunteers, and buys all its fruit and vegetables fresh each week from the Rocklea Markets.

You can also buy other heavily discounted items in their store.  The dry shelf items might have damaged packaging, be discontinued lines or close to, or past, the best before date. What they have varies each week. As an example some of the items they have at the moment are Honey, Wondersoft Toilet Paper, Meat Pies, Ribena, Frozen Vegies and Pasta.

CommuniCare is located at Woolloongabba, Caboolture and roadside at Redcliffe.

The Grocery Club – is a clearance house for many supermarkets and grocery suppliers. They have fresh and new stock arriving daily, just like the supermarkets. At the Grocery Club you can save yourself up to 50% on shelf items, because the items may be deleted lines, slightly damaged, close to use by date, or just a failed promotion. The savings on fridge and freezer stock is even higher with savings of up to 80% on normal shelf prices.

Here is an example of some of the items on special this week:

The Grocery Club is located at Rocklea, Ashmore and Beenliegh.

I apologise to all the interstate folk, as the businesses only operate in Brisbane – but I am certain there are very similar operations in other states -  and we would love to know about them so we can let other people know. If you know of other places, please let us know in the comment section below.

And I will add both these gems to the Money Saving Business Directory so you can always find their details when you need them!
